It is the policy of Chantilly High School that no administrator,
teacher or coach can require a student to choose between two extracurricular
school activities. If you are involved in two or more extracurricular school
activities, the student must advise both teachers and/or coaches so that a
schedule can be arranged to accommodate each activity, with no penalty to the
student.
The Students of the Chantilly High School Band Department
have created a program to assist in the musical development of other band
students through a volunteer tutoring program. The purpose is to provide free
tutoring for students starting to play an instrument, and a general appreciation
of music and to give CHS band students an opportunity to teach others and
benefit our community.
This extracurricular activity begins in December with
Saturday competitions in February through April. Auditions of pit percussion and
battery are required. Drum Line will rehearse two nights a week
and Saturday afternoons when there are no competitions. The Drum Line Fee will be determined yearly. Fund Raising participation
is strongly encouraged.
Students involved with Indoor Drum Line will learn and
perform as a Marching Percussion Unit. The show is written and designed to be
performed on a Basketball court. The most important aspect of this ensemble is
to have a great attitude.

Please Note:
When reference is made to “All Bands,” it includes Color
Guard |
The guidelines are outlined below as a model to follow
and for the benefit of all the members of the Color Guard.
-
Three unexcused tardies equals one unexcused absence.
-
Three excused absences result in failure to perform at next performance
whether it be home football/basketball game or a competition. You will have to
report at normal time, dress as if you were performing and sit with the other
members of the Marching Band/Winter Guard.
-
Two missed performances move you to alternate status
-
Missing the Tuesday night rehearsals during the first three weeks of
school during the fall and before each competition during fall or winter is not
recommended, please make every effort to be there.
-
It is expected that you participate in at least two fund-raisers during
each season
-
Family Emergencies
-
Sickness
-
Conflict with other legitimate school activities
The Fall Marching Color Guard is the visual ensemble of
the Marching Band. Members learn equipment skills on flag, rifle, saber or a
special item, and dance skills such as jazz, ballet and movement. Auditions are
held in the late spring and practices are held throughout the summer. Members
must attend Band Camp and must follow the same practice schedule as the Marching
Band with one exception; there is an additional Tuesday night rehearsal for the
first three weeks of school from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After the first three
weeks of school, members do not have to attend the afternoon rehearsal with the
Marching Band but must attend the evening sectional from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The Color Guard is a part of the Marching Band; therefore, all rules in regards
to attendance, rehearsals, fund-raisers, reporting times, etc., apply unless
changed by the Color Guard Instructor.
Winter Guard is an extra-curricular activity that is held
November through April each year. The members perform a 5-minute show on the gym
floor to recorded music, using equipment, dance and movement to illustrate a
theme or a concept. Auditions are held in November and rehearsals are held at
least two nights a week for three hours through the end of the season.
Competitions are held on Saturdays -- the exact schedule is approved in January.
Each course in our music program requires special items,
and a participation fee is necessary in order to achieve the goals and
objectives of each course, and to maintain uniforms and equipment. Chantilly
High School will provide the following:
 |
Rehearsal Space |
 |
Tux-Jacket, Pants, Tie, Cummerbund |
 |
Sheet music for each ensemble (to be returned intact) |
 |
Method Book (to be returned intact) |
 |
Stands and most Rehearsal Equipment |
 |
Performance Mediums |
 |
Marching: Hat, Gloves, Jacket, Pants, Shoes |
Please see the director for the use of instruments that
fill out the instrumentation of the ensemble. These instruments are available to
students for a nominal fee. All Percussionists are required to pay an annual
fee, which is used to maintain school drumheads and most mallets. This fee does
not cover replacement due to instrument abuse. Payment for these fees is to be
made to CHANTILLY HIGH SCHOOL at the beginning of the school year.
When necessary there will be a charge for trip expenses
such as transportation, Festival Fees, meals and any other items that are unique
to that trip.
Along with all of the fun we have in our program, comes
some responsibilities and rules:
 |
Respect all of the school’s equipment. Do not play around or
abuse them. |
 |
No one else is to touch or play our instruments. If you see
someone touching or playing our instruments that should not be, please ask them
to stop, or tell the Instructor, who will handle the situation. |
 |
There will be NO throwing, or misuse of the schools mallets. If
caught, you WILL purchase your own to use. |
 |
Be ready to play at the downbeat time. Arrive in time to tune your
drum, set up your equipment, and prepare yourself for rehearsal. |
-
Arrive at all practices 15-20 minutes early so that you are ready to play
at the downbeat.
-
Arrive at all games and competitions 30-45 minutes early so that we can:
 |
Repair and clean instruments |
 |
Warm up |
 |
Pack equipment (competitions) |
 |
Take equipment to the field (home games/PIT) |
You are required to be at all practices, games, and competitions. NO
EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!
You will be given breaks throughout the rehearsal so please be ready to
play at the downbeat.
At home games, after we finish playing, the Marching Band will return to
the bleachers. The PIT will move all the PIT equipment inside where it will be
set up in its’ entirety, so that it’s ready for the next practice.
At all competitions after we finish competing, everyone will pack up
their equipment and place it either on the bus or truck, which ever is
appropriate. Everyone is responsible for his or her equipment and to help
others.
-
If something breaks or is breaking please tell either the band director
or the PIT or Battery Captain. Please do not try to fix it yourself.
-
If you break something by abusing it (i.e. a mallet or drumhead) you will
be required to pay for a replacement.
-
When packing the percussion equipment be sure that either the PIT or
Battery Captain is around to supervise.
-
Instruments such as timpani and the keyboard instruments are not tables;
don’t lean or place items on them.
-
Every so often we will have sectionals and you will be given 1-2 weeks
notice. These sectionals are required just like practices and games. An
emergency sectional may also be called, please be as lenient as possible with
your schedules.
-
Don’t talk or play when others are talking or working on parts.
-
Respect your section leaders.
-
If you need a ride to a practice or game please call your Section Leader,
or refer to the phone list, or as a last resort, call the Band Director and
he/she will try to arrange for someone to pick you up.
-
Always remember that you represent Chantilly High School and are setting
examples for the rest of the band.
Please understand that any deviation from these rules may
result in an authoritative action by a section leader or band director. You are
responsible for yourself and your instrument.
